Based upon the acclaimed comic book and directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass, X-Men First Class),Kingsman: The Secret Service tells the story of a super-secret spy organization that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.

Kingsman: The Secret Service is a new spy film based on the comic book The Secret Service. The film stars Colin Firth, Mark Strong and, newcomer, Taron Egerton as Kingsman agents trying to stop Richmond Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson) from completing his plan to take over the world.

This film is the origins story. It introduces us to the notion of the Kingsman agents and it shows us how the hero, Eggsy (Egerton) becomes a Kingsman. It is a fun throwback to the classic spy films, where the villain is a flawed megalomaniac and the heroes wear fine British suits and are always perfectly polished. Sitting in the theater, one of the reviews next to me mentioned that her review was going to be simply “This film Is awesome,” because she didn’t want to ruin any of the plot or character tidbits which make this movie so enjoyable. I decided I could say a little more than “This film is awesome,” but I don’t want to ruin anything for you either.

I very much enjoyed the casting of this film. Colin Firth is perfect as Harry Hart, the senior agent working with Eggsy. He has some great lines. He is hilarious in an ultra-serious way that makes it even funnier for the audience. He and Samuel L. Jackson have some very entertaining exchanges. Hart is also easy on the eyes. Firth is in top physical form for the role. Mark Strong plays the Merlin, the Scottish technology guru in the mix. He is easier on the eyes than technology gurus in spy movies in recent memory. The newcomer is Taron Egerton in the role of training Kingsman, Eggsy. There are a few ball caps worn to the side in the film, but Eggsy wears his best. Rounding out the cast are the ladies, Sofia Boutella and Sophie Cookson. Neither one is a shrinking violet.

The special effects are next level entertaining. The script is as hilarious as it is outrageous. The fight scenes made me exhausted just watching. This is a cartoonish version of a spy film. It doesn’t take its self so seriously, and that is exactly what works about the film. It is entertainment for the sake of entertainment. All tongue in cheek. All works.

You do not want to miss this one. I hope it leads to a series. I, for one, would love to find out what happens next with Eggsy, and Merlin and all the Kingsman agents. It opens this weekend. Go check it out.

Check out the comic book that set this movie in place!

  1. I really like the commercials that I've when for this and I'm glad that you liked it and how it played with the cannon spy theme, and has some roundabout dialogue that keeps the audience entertained and laughing.m thanks for the review!
