Movie Review: Justice League - #JusticeLeague

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman's selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes-Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash-it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

The wait is finally over. Justice League is finally here and it was worth the wait. Now begins the wait for all the other future DC movies, which after seeing Justice League, you want the time to speed up of course.

Where does one begin with Justice League? Plus how does one not compromise the movie without giving away too much. So I’ll try and give you enough without giving you the whole movie. Justice League personally for me, had a great timing about it. You got spurts of action, then it would be just simple dialogue and it did that throughout the full movie. It wasn’t super heavy on the battle scenes, we got to witness more than just how well these characters fight. Superheroes have soft sides too, well maybe not Aquaman (lol).

So let’s begin with the beginning and work towards the end. Crime is everywhere! Superman dying cause such angst and despair, that now you have to think before you venture out. Batman is up to his eyeballs in bad guys, and these new bug like robots flying around causing havoc too. Losing their beacon of hope (Superman) really has cause huge turmoil, that you have to wonder how it can be turned around.

Batman as I mentioned is swamp with saving Gotham. Wonder Woman is across the pond also fighting the bad guys. The new faces such as Aquaman, Flash and Cyborg are introduced one at a time. Bruce Wayne must bring together this band of Superheroes, before end of times is upon everyone. When Bruce gets confirmation of what is already upon them, he ask for Diana’s help in recruiting of the rest of the team. This is when Bruce finally gets the story about what is happening from Arthur aka Aquaman. And what is going down is not good at all for mankind.

Once the “Justice League” is formed, this is when the movie really finds its groove. Everyone has a purpose in saving Earth. And if you watched Batman vs. Superman, did you really expect that Superman died for good? If your like me, you know it just can’t be and in Justice League, he does make his return. When and how, you’ll just have to see to know.

Other characters you will get a glimpse off for future DC movies are Shazam, Deathstoke and Queen Mera. You pretty much cheer and/or clap every time you see someone new make a camo. Deathstroke was probably the loudest cheering of them all. Justice League fans really like their villains.

As far as the new guys on the team, I loved Barry Allen aka the Flash. His jokes are pretty funny when least expected. He was a great casting choice for that part. I thought I would have a hard time accepting this Flash, since I’m a big fan of The CW’s tv version. Then let’s talk Cyborg, my heart broke for his back story. The kid had it all and then lost it, to wake up a machine. He needed the Justice League! So Victor aka Cyborg finds a purpose in life again after being transformed by his father Silas that worked at S.T.A.R. Labs. Then we go to the Arthur aka Aquaman, his character tripped me out. He doesn’t want to show that deep down inside past those muscles and tattoos, lies a soft spot. Loved his snark, and the “pitch fork” too, as Batman called it. In my opinion all the characters, new and old, have good chemistry in this film.

So I know your wondering if I’m gonna talk about Clark aka Superman at all. Well if you believe that Superman is dead and wasn’t coming back, then “what is wrong with you?”. Of course he comes back, how, when and why, I already said I won’t give away. But the Man of Steel does come back to us and once again the people will have their beacon. I want to say so much more but you’ll thank me for staying quiet about Superman. I want you to feel everything I felt when he returned to us.

Justice League is a great beginning to what is to come from DC. Jack Snyder delivers once again, but he does lighten the “mood” in Justice League compared to Batman vs. Superman. I don’t have to tell anyone to go see it, I know you all will. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

"Kingsman: The Secret Service" introduced the world to Kingsman - an independent, international intelligence agency operating at the highest level of discretion, whose ultimate goal is to keep the world safe. In "Kingsman: The Golden Circle," our heroes face a new challenge. When their headquarters are destroyed and the world is held hostage, their journey leads them to the discovery of an allied spy organization in the US called Statesman, dating back to the day they were both founded. In a new adventure that tests their agents' strength and wits to the limit, these two elite secret organizations band together to defeat a ruthless common enemy, in order to save the world, something that's becoming a bit of a habit for Eggsy...

Go see the new Kingsman movie.  There. I said it.  Kingsman : The Golden Circle deserves to be seen.  If you, as I, absolutely loved Kingsman : The Secret Service, you will enjoy this.

The Golden Circle has all of the elements that made the original Kingsman movie great.  The cast is back. Eggsy (played by Taron Egerton) is back with his story of coming of age, self-discovery and heart.  Harry (played by Colin Firth) is back with his brainy and death-defying skills. Merlin (played by Mark Strong) and all of his wonderful weapons are back, too. The gadgets, in all of their glory, are back.  Once again, there is a need to save the world from an eccentric villain.  The special effects are larger than life again, and the combat scenes are still exhilarating.

So, the questions remain, is The Golden Circle better than the original? Will you like the new installment as much as you liked the first chapter?  It kills me to say, but answers are “no” and “probably not,” respectively. The original Kingsman movie was fresh, edgy, and original, with just the right amount of juvenile adult humor mixed-in.  It was a delicate recipe. The Golden Circle has all the same ingredients in all the wrong proportions.

The Golden Circle goes wrong with the villain.  Remember Valentine (played by Samuel L. Jackson) in the first movie? He was a great parody of every Bond villain.  He dressed in loud leisurewear, he spoke with an extreme lisp, he loved McDonald’s food, and he detested the sight of blood.  It worked wonderfully.  The Golden Circle’s villain, Poppy (played by Julianne Moore), is boring by comparison.  She is boring and dull even not by comparison.  If I had never met Valentine, I would still dislike Poppy. Poppy is utterly forgettable, unfunny, flat, and boring. Instead of being a parody of a Bond villain, Poppy comes off as whiny and petulant. Her lair is unremarkable. Her gadgets are more twisted than interesting. Her henchmen are inconsequential. Bad, villain, bad!

I also didn't like the introduction to the Statesman, the American "cousins" of Kingsman. For a film that runs well over two hours, there is very little development of the Statesman. I was disappointed that Tequila (played by Channing Tatum) was reduced to a bit part. Tequila was in all of the trailers. It seemed deceptive. Whiskey (played by Pedro Pascal) is the most interesting of the Statesmen, but we didn't get to explore his character and he felt very cliché. I also wanted to see Champ (played by Jeff Bridges) utilized more and utilized better. It's Jeff Bridges! Seems like a waste to make his character one-dimensional. The first installment was very much an ensemble affair. The new chapter isn't as inclusive.. The film is still very Eggsy and Harry centered, which isn't a bad thing, but it seemed like Matthew Vaughn (the producer and director) forgot the rest of the cast.  I did enjoy Gingerale (played by Halle Berry), but not enough to make up for the other issues with the Statesman.

I also had a problem with how political the plot was written. I understand that the gist is international espionage, but I'm sick of the politics, everywhere. What has happened to the escapist nature of movies if even the Kingsman have to be so policial?  In the first installment, all of the world leaders and celebrities were being kidnapped, so there were some politics, funny politics. There was nothing funny about the politics in The Golden Circle. This installment had many cringe-worthy scenes and dialogue. I resented even the political statements that I agreed with because I hated that they were being forced into the plot.

So why go, you ask? You have to see it for the "secret" cameo. A lot of outlets have divulged the celebrity in the secret cameo, but I'm not going to mention it, as not to spoil it for those that don't know. It's enough to say that the performance is hilarious and dynamic and it's everything that you loved about the first Kingsman movie. You also want to go see The Golden Circle to see the characters who you know and love. Merlin (played by Mark Strong) has a really great scene. You have to see how Harry survived being shot in the head. Finally, you have to see what is next for Eggsy.

I'm glad that I saw The Golden Circle.. I'm hopeful that there will be a third chapter and that the spies can get back on track. There are still more stories to tell about the Kingsman. The first installment set a very high bar. The Golden Circle lowers it some, but it was still a fun and ridiculous adventure. See Kingsman : The Golden Circle playing everywhere now.

Movie Review: STX Entertainment's Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planets

Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planets
Starring Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Ethan Hawke, Rihanna, Clive Owen, John Goodman, Herbie Hancock, Kris Wu, Rutger Hauer
Directed by Luc Besson
Written by Luc Besson (screenplay), Pierre Christin & Jean-Claude Mézières (comics)
In the 28th century, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are a team of special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the Minister of Defense, the two embark on a mission to the astonishing city of Alpha-an ever-expanding metropolis where species from all over the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures with each other. There is a mystery at the center of Alpha, a dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.
STXfilms’ VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS is directed by Luc Besson (THE PROFESSIONAL, THE FIFTH ELEMENT AND LUCY)

I packed a bag and traveled to another galaxy, or another dimension, or a series of dimensions, and definitely a lot of planets, etc. It’s possible that I get all the specifics of the journey, but I knew the guides, Valerian and Laureline, and the trip was fun.  I checked reality at the door and watched Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, now playing.  It was a blast.  Valerian is a fun space saga for a new generation.

Valerian isn’t perfect.  I would say far from it.  Let’s get the criticism out of the way. Dane DeHaan (as Valerian) and Cara Delevingne (as Laureline) have zero chemistry.  I wasn’t buying that either one of them cared for the other.  So, some of the intended romantic scenes fall flat, and others are cringe-worthy.  Thankfully, this isn’t a romance film.

Also, some of the dialogue was awkward.  For a movie that takes place in the future, the writers should be able to muster more than clichés from 1995. The writing seemed sloppy.  It was especially awkward when Valerian and Laureline converse with each other. But, there weren’t many dialogue heavy moments.   This is a sci-fi action flick.

As an action flick, it was a ton of fun.  There are spaceship battles, gun battles, knife fights, hand-to-hand combat and beast versus man fights.  The action certainly kept the plot moving along.  It made it so that the entire audience stayed in their seat, waiting for the next battle to break-out. There are a lot of original locations, and different atmospheres and wild scenery at which to gaze. I loved the gadgets and the weapons.  It felt very original.  There is a scene in an intergalactic shopping mall that was a feast for the eyes.

Visually, Valerian is a grand spectacle. Even with its flaws, the film kept me very interested. Put simply, I wanted to see what was next.  I wanted to meet the residents of the City of a Thousand Planets. I was blown away by the originality and the creativity.  In an entertainment field of re-hashed and re-booted genre, Valerian is an original.  The aliens were something to behold.  The shapes, colors and comic relief provided by the many life-forms were appreciated.

I commend Luc Benson, the writer and director, for daring to have a vision of his own and creating something other than an ordinary caper.  With a rating of PG-13, it was perfect for my tweens, who loved it.  I recommend watching Valerian’s splendor in a theater, in order to appreciate all the creative nuances. I bet it looks great on a premium screen.  Don’t get bogged down in the details.  Enjoy the ride. See Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets playing everywhere now.

Genres: Animation | Action | Crime | Drama | Thriller
MPAA Rating: Rated R for some bloody images and disturbing content

Due to overwhelming fan demand and sold out theaters in major markets, more than 300 theater locations have been added for the big-screen debut of “Batman: The Killing Joke,” now showing at over 1,000 U.S. cinemas and making this the widest rollout for any event in Fathom Events’ history. The acclaimed graphic novel-turned-film will be shown for just one night on Monday, July 25, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. local time. This event reunites the foundation of “Batman: The Animated Series” with Bruce Timm returning as executive producer, and actors Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill reprising their seminal roles as Batman and The Joker, respectively.

In addition to the animated feature, audience members will get to experience a special introduction from Hamill, plus a never-before-seen documentary about the actor and his passion for this project. The event also includes a special behind-the-scenes look at how the Joker’s memorable, yet disturbing, song and dance number was recreated for this feature. “Batman: The Killing Joke” is a 2K presentation that has been remastered for this theatrical event.

Patrick's Review: Alan Moore is considered one of the most famous graphic novel writers of all time. Many of his novels have made it to the screen "V for Vendetta," "Watchmen," and now "Batman: The Killing Joke." The new animated Batman is an origin story following the Joker. Along with having a great story, having returning cast Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill, and being my favorite comic book it is needless to say that I was very excited. Unfortunately, the added prologue was thirty minutes of Barbara Gordon (Tara Strong) and her intimate relationship with Batman. It was understandable that Barbara should be a stronger character, but the execution was poor and her story ultimately detracted from the overall film. Once "The Killing Joke" from the novel started, the film became enjoyable.

From here on out there will be spoilers: The movie starts with Batgirl stating that the story is actually about her. This will come a great surprise to anyone who has read the graphic novel. The movie then spends thirty minutes showing Batgirl flirting, fighting, sleeping, and then again fighting with Batman. The relationship takes away from Batman's motivation to confront the Joker and thus diminishes the great story.

After the prologue finishes the story begins to follow the graphic novel, and is therefore significantly better. Batman, in fear that a confrontation with the Joker will end in some sort of death, wants to make sure that he has made an attempt to work things out. The Joker is out to prove that one bad day can change someone into himself or Batman. He attempts to give Jim Gordon this bad day, and he reminisces about being a comedian trying to make it. As the comedian, he attempts to make some money for his pregnant wife by helping some gangsters rob a card company. His day spirals out of control as death surrounds him and it finishes with a confrontation with a young Batman.

Overall, “The Killing Joke” is worth a watch. The story is a classic and one of the better origin stories out there. As long as you start the movie as you prepare your favorite snack, this movie is great.

Cheyenne's Review: Warning:spoilers ahead!

The Killing Joke was thoroughly enjoyable. From reading the comic I know that not everything in the movie was going to be the same. This, however, added to the movie for me. I really enjoyed the background on Barbara Gordon, because it not only showed what she was going through before being shot, but what she became afterwards (Oracle). I also liked how the movie shows the struggles that Batgirl went through in trying to get Batman to accept her and take her seriously. She wants to be an equal to him, but he is not the trusting type and would much prefer her to listen and learn from him than to take on things by herself. The only thing I could have done without was the physical relationship between batman and batgirl. It took away from all of the fighting she had done previously to become his partner and earn the name of batgirl.

Otherwise I loved seeing one of my favorite comics come to life. They did a fantastic job with the rest of the film, and it followed the comic very closely. The relationship between the joker and batman was spot on, and the voice actors did a wonderful job bringing their characters to life. Mark Hamill somehow made the joker both sinister and cheerful at the same time. In the movie, the joker emphasizes that one bad day can absolutely change someone's life. His story begins with him as a failed comedian just trying to make a living for him and his pregnant wife. He then takes a job to steal something and ends up falling into the vat of acid that makes him into the joker that everyone knows today. The movie goes on to show the joker trying to give Jim Gordon his bad day and make him as damaged as he is. The musical number was one of my favorite scenes, because it appeared to be an upbeat one but if you listened to the words they were very sinister. It showed that the joker wants to appear as a funny guy, but he is really a very disturbed individual.

I had no real expectations going in, but the Killing Joke turned out to be a great movie, and one that I would definitely watch again.

OFFICIAL HASHTAG: #Deadpool
Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Ha! Where does one begin with this film. Did I love it, heck yes! It's a much needed break from the superhero movies that have been popping out like Pez candy. Deadpool is not the typical good guy fights the bad guys and falls in love with a sweet innocent girl, noooooo and if that's what you expect, then don't bother going to see it. Now if you want to see a guy that was dealt a really crappy deck of cards, then is mislead into something even worse and still comes out cracking jokes left and right with a touch of bloody, then Deadpool is your film.

Ryan Reynolds slays his part as Deadpool. Seriously they couldn't have pick a more perfect actor to represent this marvel anti-hero. Everything we love/hate about Reynolds is amplified in Deadpool. The grittiness of his humor, will leave you in stitches. And just when your laughter begins to calm down, BAM he hits you with another line that sends you doubling over again. Deadpool had me laughing out loud from beginning to end!

There is so much that I loved about the film, I already mentioned Reynolds acting, but the movie itself is brilliant. The delivery is not what your used to. The opening credits are brilliant, when you don't see an actors name but instead a description, such as douche bag or ass hat for director, you know your sitting at the right theater for the right film. Then cue the moments that Deadpool talks to the camera (us) was genius. Seriously the writers were on their A game when they came up with the screenplay!

As far as the story itself, Deadpool is set on finding the guy that turned him into the abomination that he is. He wants Francis (Ed Skrein) to fix his face, so that he is able to go back to the girl (Morena Baccani) he loves, which he left without saying goodbye after he was diagnosed with a terminal disease. So Deadpool stops at nothing and eliminates anyone and everyone that gets in his way (or not). A man in love is hard to defeat and bring down and that's Deadpool. So be ready to watch as he takes on all the bad guys with his swords, guns and humor!

I highly recommend Deadpool if you are looking to be entertained for the entirety of the film and seriously want a freaking good laugh. Now if you have kiddos, I would not bring them along, the R is not exaggerated. You have full nudity, the foulest language and serious gore that you don't want to have to explain to the little ones. Think Ted the movie had a baby with 300 the movie and Deadpool was the bundle of joy, clear enough for ya? lol!!!
