When I finished The Dark Heroine: Dinner with a Vampire about a year ago, it was left me speechless at the beginning and at the end! Since Twilight I usually refrained from any books dealing with vampires. It was the cover and the fact that this author began this story at such a young age that captured my attention. Violet Lee and Kaspar Varn left me wondering so much. The story continues, however with a twist. Violet and Kaspar are no longer the center of the story, Autumn and Fallon are. I assumed the story would pick up right where it left off. I was wrong.

I stayed away from early author interviews and blog posts, because I like the element of surprise. Surprised I was, to find that Autumn Rose was the beginning of a new saga that would soon cross paths with Violet Lee. To my disappointment Violet and Kaspar are no where in sight until the very end. It’s all about Autumn Rose. Autumn is a Sage. Bound to guard the humans of the present day from the Extermino. She tries very hard to appear to be your average student, in an everyday high school. Deep down however, she isn’t. She’s royalty, she’s a protector, a guardian with a mission. She is determined to save and protect those that she is destined to save. Along the way she speaks to her grandmother who has died. She looks to her spirit and voice for direction in stressful times. Wishing for answers to bring two worlds together.

When I was 75% finished with Autumn Rose I knew it would be a 4 tree review. However, the ending was a review changer for me. Ms. Gibbs truly hooked her readers in book 1 with Violet’s distressed story and final revelation. She did the same with Autumn Rose. She provided the reader with so much back story that it gave us a closer look of the settings and missions being presented. I hope my wait for book 3 will not be as long. It is truly exciting to see female protagonists grow and grow within a series. There are several minor characters that know have a story waiting to flow from the pen to paper. This series will continue to go far in so many ways. Lastly, there are many questions left unanswered. For me, that is what makes amazing writing!

A Saturday Moment with Deitre

I know it's Sunday again. I can't really bring myself to change the title. I was thinking I might skip this week, because there weren't any huge bookish moments that really hit me.  However, here I type, before life takes me to a Sunday afternoon meeting at 4:00. This week's nights have been filled with so much reading. I have truly put myself in speed read mode! I can't do it as fast as Josh or Lydey with our reviewer coven, but when a book needs to be read, it needs to be read. Autumn Rose By Abigail Gibbs, finished. I can't wait to share the review with you on Tuesday. It will be a part of a book tour with MundieMoms.

I'm still working on some children's books from Candlewick Press and Forever by Emma Dodd is next in line to read. It is always nice to jump from Adult to YA to Children's. I had forgotten all about my love for children's books. So these have been a nice treat.  Check out  A Leisure Moment next week.  Yara is showcasing one of her childhood favorites on tomorrow.  You won't want to miss it!

Interview with Abigail Gibbs

OUaT: Hello Abigail and welcome to OUaT! To start off tell us a little bit about yourself for those that might not be familiar with you.

I’m Abigail Gibbs, I’m nineteen and my heart absolutely and completely belongs to Chaucer and not to vampires at all, zilch, none – or at least that is what I tell my tutors at Oxford University, where I’m reading for an English degree. I have a cat who I have a time share agreement with for my bedroom during term-time, an entire world inside my head and I own corsets. A lot of them. Sometimes I write about corsets and my imaginary world (though not cats) and what ended up on the page became my first novel, The Dark Heroine: Dinner With A Vampire, and then some more words appeared and that became the sequel, Autumn Rose. But I definitely spend all my time writing essays on Chaucer.

OUaT: How different does it feel now that your second book will be getting published as to when it was your debut?

I’m a lot more confident now. I’m happy to write or go to interviews without feeling so self-conscious, and I understand the publishing process much better, so my poor editor and agent aren’t constantly plagued with worried emails! There is more pressure with a second book, however: will it live up to the first book? Do better, worse? What if people don’t like it? etc. I think you are more aware of your own vulnerability because this isn’t your (obviously absolutely fantastic and perfect) debut.

A Saturday Moment with Deitre

After 2 weeks of sleeping, reading, coffee drinking and keeping my electric blanket on high, I can truly say its been a rough week getting back into the swing of things.  A winner for Renewing Hope, Shelly, was picked and boy is she going to be in for a treat with a great read and that extra box of ARCs that Josh will be putting in the mail this morning.  I like to read a lot of inspirational books and Amish Fiction.  When I can't get my reading in, then the next best to get to that "happy place" is a quick visit to Yoder's Market here in my town.  This week along with a lot of other items as well,  I picked up a red velvet whoopee pie that I just had to share with your guys.  Oh my goodness, delish  is all I can say!  It didn't last one hour in the my house!

So right now I'm reading one adult book and one young adult book.  When I received Autumn Rose from Yara, I jumped, silently screamed and quickly began counting the days and ours for me to begin book 2 of this series (this afternoon, yeah me!)  I've waited a very long time for this.  It's like Christmas all over again.  I may even have to miss episode 2 of Downton Abbey, so that I can read all weekend!

Lastly, I'm trying to get the word out about A Leisure Moment. I'm going to have a giveaway opportunity every Saturday for the remainder of January and all of February.  So pass the word to any bookish people you know, especially students.  The reluctant reader,  the kid that says he or she can never find anything worth reading.  We are here to help!  Until next week…

Top Ten New to Me Authors I Read this Year

Walter Jury & S.E. Fine: They co-wrote SCAN due out May 2014. Scan is science fiction at its finest, great team work behind the book. 

Morgan Rhodes: Not sure why it took me so long to finally read Falling Kingdoms but I'm glad I had Rebel Spring in hand to read back to back. LOVED!!!

Heidi McLaughlin: Started with Lost in You and now Ive read a couple of McLaughlin's books such as My Unexpected Forever. Great writer. 

Samantha Shannon: It took me a few tries to get into the book, but when I came back to it and started from the beginning again with a clear mind, I was SOLD on The Bone Season.

Jennifer Miller: Pretty Little Lies was a much needed HEA read and I loved Miller's writing especially how she began each chapters, Awesome touch!

Sarah Crossan: Breathe is one of those books that pops into your head time after time long after you finished reading it. 

Shannon Messenger: I am thrilled I did pick up Let the Sky Fall, its such a unique concept Messenger wrote that I fell in love with. 

Rick Yancey: The 5th Wave was amazeballs, had me at the edge of my seat the whole time. 

Zoraida Córdova: Love me a great story based in the sea with all sorts of sea creatures such as Mermaids with razor-sharp teeth. Córdova won herself a fan with The Vicious Deep.

Abigail Gibbs: Her story started off on Wattpad and now is a published book that has turned series, Can't wait to sink my teeth into The Dark Heroine's sequel Autumn Rose.

Every detail of her character's develop has not gone untouched. Above all, with every page read, I could see with extreme clarity the scenes that she created and the tone that poured from the pages while reading.

I'm a little leery when it comes to vampire novels written by someone other than Stephenie Meyer and J.R. Ward. I tend to shy away, and grab another book of interest. My inner mind continues to hold tightly to their main characters in their novels, not really allowing room for others to join. So when I realized that Dark Heroine was next on my list to read, I did what I always do as a reviewer: add it to my Goodreads account and check out the summary and author. Well I must say, by doing so, caused me to do a little more research on the the author before I even got started reading. I was fascinated by Abigail Gibbs and how her novel started through the use of wattpad, at such a very young age. Being a reader of fan fiction as well, I can't believe that I allowed this book to slip by me. Thankfully, I didn't have to wait for chapter, by chapter updates. I could read Dark Heroine from start to finish. I could read about the lives of Violet and Kaspar with surprises around every single corner.
