Book Review: This is Kind of an Epic Love Story by Kheryn Callender

This is Kind of an Epic Love Story
Author: Kheryn Callender
Reading Level:
Genres: Contemporary Romance | LGBT
Released: October 30th 2018
Review Source: Balzer + Bray (HarperCollins)

A fresh, charming rom-com perfect for fans of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda and Boy Meets Boy about Nathan Bird, who has sworn off happy endings but is sorely tested when his former best friend, Ollie, moves back to town.

Nathan Bird doesn’t believe in happy endings. Although he’s the ultimate film buff and an aspiring screenwriter, Nate’s seen the demise of too many relationships to believe that happy endings exist in real life.

Playing it safe to avoid a broken heart has been his MO ever since his father died and left his mom to unravel—but this strategy is not without fault. His best-friend-turned-girlfriend-turned-best-friend-again, Florence, is set on making sure Nate finds someone else. And in a twist that is rom-com-worthy, someone does come along: Oliver James Hernández, his childhood best friend.

After a painful mix-up when they were little, Nate finally has the chance to tell Ollie the truth about his feelings. But can Nate find the courage to pursue his own happily ever after?

This is Kind of an Epic Love Story is the cutest story. It's also a story you can knock out in 1-3 days of reading. It is a LGBT, but don't let that stop you from reading it, if you haven't read this type of genre before. The book is heavily based on its characters and their lives. At times you will get frustrated with them, but then you wanna hug them too. You do get sucked in to the story and that's the art of writing a good book by an author.

The story behind This is Kind of an Epic Love Story is not your typical easy romance, things are complicated. Nate, the main guy here, makes sure of that. He is done believing in "happy Ever After". That's BS for him. Of course, things never stay the same as one predicts. Nate will be tested and tried, but in the end, I think the outcome he earned. Sometimes, the best things in life are not easy to come by. This is why in life, you need a really strong support system to have on your side.

If your looking for a fun, romantic quick read, try This is Kind of an Epic Love Story!

Fans of Jacqueline Woodson, Meg Medina, and Jason Reynolds will fall hard for this astonishing #ownvoices novel-in-verse by award-winning slam poet Elizabeth Acevedo, about an Afro-Latina heroine who tells her story with blazing words and powerful truth. Xiomara Batista feels unheard and unable to hide in her Harlem neighborhood. Ever since her body grew into curves, she has learned to let her fists and her fierceness do the talking. But Xiomara has plenty she wants to say, and she pours all her frustration and passion onto the pages of a leather notebook, reciting the words to herself like prayers—especially after she catches feelings for a boy in her bio class named Aman, who her family can never know about. With Mami’s determination to force her daughter to obey the laws of the church, Xiomara understands that her thoughts are best kept to herself. So when she is invited to join her school’s slam poetry club, she doesn’t know how she could ever attend without her mami finding out. But she still can’t stop thinking about performing her poems. Because in the face of a world that may not want to hear her, Xiomara refuses to be silent.

HARPERAUDIO TO PUBLISH DARK CAROUSEL, A VINYL-FIRST AUDIOBOOK BY JOE HILL

New York, NY (January 19, 2018)—HarperAudio, the audio imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, will publish Dark Carousel, a “vinyl-first” audiobook by New York Times bestselling author Joe Hill on April 20, 2018. With a release timed to coincide with Record Store Day on April 21Dark Carousel is narrated by television and film actor Nate Corddry and features a cover of “Wild Horses” by The Rolling Stones, recorded expressly for the record by Matthew Ryan.

The package features original artwork, two colorful “splattered” records, and a full-length download of the Dark Carousel audiobook. In cooperation with Think Indie, HarperAudio and vinyl label Wax announced a limited first printing of 2,500 copies.

Today, Entertainment Weekly revealed the cover of Dark Carousel along with an exclusive excerpt from the audiobook: http://bit.ly/2CvJzCR

Says author Joe Hill, “My hard rockin’ fantasies are pretty well documented at this point — the hero of my first novel was, after all, a world-famous heavy metal rocker. I’ve always wanted to have my own LP, and the idea that one of my stories is being released as an audiobook on vinyl blows my Beatles-quoting, Stones-fixated, Zeppelin-obsessed mind. Even better, I’m on the record with Matthew Ryan, a great American rocknrolla. His cover of “Wild Horses” is the best version of the song since the original. I’m so excited for readers and listeners to drop the needle on this story and Matt’s song."

Written about a balmy summer night in 1994. Dark Carousel is the tale of four teenagers out for an evening of fun on the boardwalk who take a ride on the “Wild Wheel” – an antique carousel with a shadowy past – and learn too late that decisions made in an instant can have deadly consequences. What begins as a night of innocent end-of-summer revelry, young love, and (a few too many) beers among friends soon descends into chaos, as the ancient carousel’s parade of beasts comes chillingly to life to deliver the ultimate judgment for their misdeeds.

HarperAudio plans to continue its partnership with Wax by publishing a vinyl edition of the award-winning full cast recording of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events #1, The Bad Beginning featuring Tim Curry on October 23, 2018.

Book Review: Santa's Moose by Syd Hoff

Santa's Moose
I Can Read Level 1
Author: Syd Hoff (Illustrator)
Reading Level: Preschool - 3
Genres: Holidays | Beginners | Humor | Picture
Released: September 19, 2017 (Reprint edition)
Review Source: HarperCollins

A holiday classic by the author of Danny and the Dinosaur, available again—and now with full-color art!

Milton the moose wants to help pull Santa’s sleigh. “I have never used a moose before,” says Santa, “but I’m willing if you are.” At first, clumsy Milton is not very good at landing on roofs. But when Santa’s sleigh becomes too heavy for the tired reindeer, Milton comes to the rescue. This reissued edition is a funny holiday twist on Santa and his reindeer by Syd Hoff, celebrated author of Danny and the Dinosaur.

Santa’s Moose is a Level One I Can Read book, which means it’s perfect for children learning to sound out words and sentences.

Oh how much I loved reading this story. I was not familiar with it before. It was originally printed in 1979. Milton the Moose is pretty awesome. I think all preschoolers would really enjoy this story told in the classroom at school. If a teacher is not familiar with this story, then please acquire this book.

Santa's Moose is classified as a Level 1 in the I Can Read books. It's a good little book to get new readers interested in reading, the illustrations are wonderful and colorful and this story is so much fun. They will want to know what Milton the Moose is up too. It will encourage them to want to practice their reading.

Now on to Milton and his story. Oh my gosh, so Milton is a moose in the woods, that is super excited about Christmas coming up. So when he comes across the 8 reindeers, on their way to the North Pole. Milton decides he wants to help Santa too. And what do you know, Santa says yes and away they go. Of course Milton is quite large since he is a moose and has a bit of trouble at first, but they he gets the hang of it and ends up saving Christmas you can say. It's a really adorable story. Perfect for the upcoming Christmas season.

Since this is a Christmas book and Christmas is all about sharing, I will be giving away a brand new paperback copy Santa's Moose. Just enter below. a Rafflecopter giveaway

Isabelle crosses land and sea; unearthly, thorny vines rise up the palace walls; and whispers of revolt travel in the ashes on the wind. The kingdom falls to ruin under layers of snow. Meanwhile, Aurora wakes up in a strange and enchanted world, where a mysterious hunter may be the secret to her escape . . . or the reason for her to stay.

Spindle Fire is the first book in a lush fantasy duology set in the dwindling, deliciously corrupt world of the fae and featuring two truly unforgettable heroines.

Book Review: The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani

The School for Good and Evil
The School for Good and Evil #1
Author: Soman Chainani
Reading Level: Middle Grade
Genre: Fairy Tales
Released: May 14th 2013
Review Source: HarperCollins

The first kidnappings happened two hundred years before. Some years it was two boys taken, some years two girls, sometimes one of each. But if at first the choices seemed random, soon the pattern became clear. One was always beautiful and good, the child every parent wanted as their own. The other was homely and odd, an outcast from birth. An opposing pair, plucked from youth and spirited away.

This year, best friends Sophie and Agatha are about to discover where all the lost children go: the fabled School for Good & Evil, where ordinary boys and girls are trained to be fairy tale heroes and villains. As the most beautiful girl in Gavaldon, Sophie has dreamed of being kidnapped into an enchanted world her whole life. With her pink dresses, glass slippers, and devotion to good deeds, she knows she’ll earn top marks at the School for Good and graduate a storybook princess. Meanwhile Agatha, with her shapeless black frocks, wicked pet cat, and dislike of nearly everyone, seems a natural fit for the School for Evil.

But when the two girls are swept into the Endless Woods, they find their fortunes reversed—Sophie’s dumped in the School for Evil to take Uglification, Death Curses, and Henchmen Training, while Agatha finds herself in the School For Good, thrust amongst handsome princes and fair maidens for classes in Princess Etiquette and Animal Communication.. But what if the mistake is actually the first clue to discovering who Sophie and Agatha really are…?

This is a alternative take to the fairy tales and the whole idea about princesses and their villain nemesis’s. There have been two children disappearing over the course of history, and only seem to turn up in fairy tales. Sophia know’s whats up, and is ready to become the princess she has always felt she deserved to be, and has befriended Agatha. Who’s outcast demeanor casts her as the obvious choice to be the witch to Sophia’s princess.

The story itself is entertaining, watching the School for Good and Evil, following their classes and seeing how vastly different the schools are to each other. While it is marketed towards middle Grade readers, a good story is a good story, despite the offered reading level. I enjoyed reading the book, already bought books two and three.

It’s no real surprise that Sophia is dropped into the School for Evil, where as Agatha is placed into the School for Good. Although at first it’s highly entertaining, it makes sense with their deepest truest nature. Enjoy!

Interview

Just to get the ball rolling, who is Katharine McGee and what is she all about?

I’m originally from Houston, Texas and went to college at Princeton, where I studied French literature and constantly took the train into New York. I think that’s when I first fell in love with the city. After I graduated, I moved to Manhattan and worked in publishing for four years, in editorial; before heading to California to get an MBA. I now live in Philadelphia with my fiancé (we’re getting married on October 1st!) I have always been a reader, and it is a lifelong dream of mine to publish a novel. I can’t believe it’s coming true.

Can you tell me a little bit about how the idea of The Thousandth Floor behind it came about?

I was working in publishing at the time, during the height of the dystopian craze. I’m a big fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, but I couldn’t help wondering… why hadn’t anyone written a hopeful (or at least realistic) version of the future? One without a caste system, or battles to the death, or power-hungry warlords who must be killed. It seemed to me that if no one else was going to write it, then maybe I should.

The real turning point was when I read an article I read about Sky City, a project being constructed in China. It’s an enormous, self-contained “vertical city” just like the Tower in The Thousandth Floor—complete with schools, apartments, hospitals, even vertical farms! Once I read the article, I knew that a vertical city would be the setting for my optimistic future novel.

Some of the futuristic elements in the novel are based on reality, and some, I will admit, came straight from my imagination! My goal with The Thousandth Floor wasn’t to predict the future, so much as to give readers hope that maybe the future will be better the present. I like to think that we will have solved some problems by then—though of course, we’ll still have others to face.

Was there a scene that didn't make it into the book that you wish had?

In my very first draft of the partial manuscript, Eris had a genetically engineered mini giraffe as a pet. Remember the ones in the Direct TV commercials from a few years ago—a giraffe so small you could hold it in your hand! Ultimately, my editors felt that it was too silly of a detail to feel realistic, so I cut it. But I still really miss Lorenzo, Eris’s pet giraffe.

What were your biggest challenges in writing The Thousandth Floor?

Honestly, time management. I was still getting my MBA while I was writing, so I struggled to balance homework with writing time. Most of The Thousandth Floor was written at the Stanford library… I would sneak coffee into the library and sit in the big reading room with the undergraduates. Sometimes I would even eavesdrop on their conversations for inspiration!

Did you pull anything from your life to put into this story? Or do any of your characters have some tics that people in your life have?

There are aspects of me in each of the characters. I really love my younger sister and am incredibly proud of her; so a lot of my feelings toward her went into Rylin’s relationship with Chrissa. I’ve experienced insecurities like Leda’s, and I can sometimes be flaky or emotional the way Eris is. I gave Avery my love of art history, or as Watt puts it, “old things”. And I can relate to Watt’s determination and ambition (I also gave him the snarkiness of my fiancé, who like Watt has a very dry sense of humor).

To which Hogwarts House do you belong?

Ravenclaw! While it would be fun to be Gryffindor, I know that I’m a Ravenclaw at heart—I love libraries, I took Ph.D.-level classes in college (for fun), and I think the Grey Lady is far and away the coolest of the Hogwarts ghosts. Also, blue is my favorite color ☺

Katharine McGee is from Houston, Texas. She studied English and French literature at Princeton and has an MBA from Stanford. It was during her years living in a second-floor apartment in New York City that she kept daydreaming about skyscrapers . . . and then she started writing.
