Rose & Thorn
Ash & Bramble #2
Author: Sarah Prineas
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Fantasy
Released: October 18th 2016
Review Source: HarperTeen

This beauty isn’t sleeping! Discover the true story of Sleeping Beauty in Sarah Prineas’s bold YA fairy-tale retelling filled with thrilling adventure and romance, perfect for fans of The Lunar Chronicles and The Girl of Fire & Thorns trilogy.

After the spell protecting her is destroyed, Rose seeks safety in the world outside the valley she had called home. She’s been kept hidden all her life to delay the three curses she was born with—curses that will put her into her own fairy tale and a century-long slumber. Accompanied by the handsome and mysterious Watcher, Griff, and his witty and warmhearted partner, Quirk, Rose tries to escape from the ties that bind her to her story. But will the path they take lead them to freedom, or will it bring them straight into the fairy tale they are trying to avoid?

Set in the world of Sarah Prineas’s Ash & Bramble fifty years later, Rose & Thorn is a powerful retelling of the classic Sleeping Beauty tale where the characters fight to find their own Happy Ever After.

Why was this story so short? Is it because I was enjoying it so much, Sarah just wanted to tease me? Because if it is, then that's not fair, I need more. Rose & Thorn is by far my favorite of this series. From the very beginning this story was compelling.

Rose has been living her entire life apart from the world. She's been protected by the Penwitch's power and  been guarded by Shoe, yes that Shoe. She's very naive and has a lot to learn. But when the protection is broken, Rose must learn to survive the cruel world and get all three curses removed. Like Sleeping Beauty, Rose has been blessed by beauty but this makes the quest very challenging. And unlike Sleeping Beauty, Rose takes matter into her own hands.

What I love most about this story is how Rose composed herself throughout this challenging quest. The only person she knew died and instead of breaking down, this naive girl decided to take a journey to figure out who she is. Though it took a while, Rose learns she is headstrong, willing to learn and doesn't need Prince Charming to survive. She doesn't wait around and she takes action to her own destiny. This is very admiring -- Girl POWER.

Rose & Thorn is interesting, twisted and compelling. It deals with gender, power, and choosing your destiny. It's well paced, fun and simply admiring. The main character is charming, fierce and passionate. Her character development is very memorable and admiring. It's definitely an inspiring story which I recommend to every girl out there. Even to those wishing for someone to come to their rescue. You can chose your own fate, no matter your gender. Now, can Sarah write another book? I can't get enough of this series!

Book Review: Ash & Bramble by Sarah Prineas

Ash & Bramble
Author: Sarah Prineas
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Fantasy
Released: September 15th 2015

When the glass slipper just doesn’t fit…

The tale of Cinderella has been retold countless times. But what you know is not the true story.

Pin has no recollection of who she is or how she got to the Godmother’s fortress. She only knows that she is a Seamstress, working day in and out to make ball gowns fit for fairy tales. But she longs to forsake her backbreaking servitude and dares to escape with the brave young Shoemaker.

Pin isn’t free for long before she’s captured again and forced to live the new life the Godmother chooses for her—a fairy tale story, complete with a charming prince—instead of finding her own happily ever after.

Sarah Prineas’s bold fairy tale retelling is a dark and captivating world where swords are more fitting than slippers, young shoemakers are just as striking as princes, and a heroine is more than ready to rescue herself before the clock strikes midnight.

Ash & Bramble is a fun, dark and twisted tale! Although the first half wasn’t as enthusiastic, the second half of the book totally makes up for it! And even though the characters were not perfect, their flaws will have you turning those pages!

If you’re looking for a happy Cinderella re-telling then this is not the book for you. Ash & Bramble is more than what meets the eyes. No, this story is unique on its own with some sick plot twists! And if you love dark plots, then you have to read this book.

From the very beginning of the story, Ash & Bramble will make your head spin. With WTF is going? To wait, no way, that did not just happend comments. The main character, Pin, will have you second guessing yourself of what is going on with her. I’m not planning to go into details because it will give the story away. Just be aware, if you’re not a fan of love triangles, then stay away! However, if you love chaos and madness, then say hello to Ash & Bramble.

Despite the dark twists, the book has a happy ending. Pin is the perfect example of an independent young lady. She’s not willing to depend on anyone but herself. Not even fate can hold her down. No, she will do everything and anything to choose her own adventures. A sick dark tale with a gripping, magical and inspiring end.

Interview

Can you start off by telling us about Ash & Bramble and where you got the inspiration to write it?
Two big questions led me to write Ash & Bramble.  One, in fairytales there’s all this stuff: glass slippers, poisoned apples, sharpened spindles, and of course, the glittering, gorgeous ball gowns.  But I wondered: where does all that stuff come from?  The answer, of course, was the Godmother: she has enslaved the finest seamstresses and craftsmen to make things for her powerful stories.

The second question was: What if you got trapped inside a fairytale—like Cinderella—and it turned out you didn’t like Prince Charming very much, or the story’s plans for you?  What would you do to get out of it?

What did you enjoy most about writing/creating the character Pin?
Her voice.  She’s snarky and fierce and smart.  The cover of the book shows her running away, which she does at the strike of midnight, but she also knows how to stand and fight.

Was there a specific part in the book that you had an especially difficult time writing?  If so, why?
This is my eighth published novel, but my very first YA (all my others are MG), and at first it was hard to write the relationship stuff.  It’s so immediate and so intensely emotional!  My editor was like, “moar kissing scenes!”  And I was like, “Okay!”  while squirming.  In the end, I loved writing those scenes, and they’re the ones I go back and read over and over again.

What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?
I’m psyched about the climactic scene because all three plot lines come together at once: Pin’s internal journey, her love relationship, and the external confrontation with the story’s bad guy.

In less than 140 characters, how would you promote Ash & Bramble on twitter?

Pin, caught up in the Cinderella story, asks, “What if the stories tell us?”
